Jean Alesi Biography

A mercurial and forceful racer, French-Italian driver Jean Alesi first came to prominence when he won the 1987 French F3 Championship. After struggling in his first season of F3000 with Oreca in 1988, Eddie Jordan gave him a chance for 1989. Alesi proved the find of the season, clinching the championship despite moving up to F1 for Tyrrell halfway through the year. At one stage on his F1 debut at Paul Ricard, he was running as high as second behind Alain Prost. Eventually he finished a stunning fourth.

As other strong results flowed, including a sensational second place in Phoenix in 1990 to Senna and another in Monte Carlo, the top teams began circling. Admitting that his heart ruled his head, Alesi turned down an offer from Williams to partner Prost at Ferrari in 1991. Alesi’s story over the next five years became one of promise tragically unfulfilled as the red cars struggled. More than once he seemed set to win, only for fate to intervene. By 1995 Ferrari had tired of his histrionics, which were born of his desperation to win and replaced him with Michael Schumacher.

Alesi moved to Benetton, where he notched up his first – and only – F1 victory at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix. Remarkably, he won the race on his 31st birthday. Further stints followed with Sauber, Prost and Jordan before Alesi retired at the end of 2001 after 201 Formula 1 starts. Alesi moved to DTM for the next five years, scoring five victories.

He is currently a commentator for Canal+. His son Giuliano Alesi will compete in the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship alongside Mick Schumacher, the son of Jean's former rival Michael Schumacher. Alesi is passionate about wine and has his own vineyard near his hometown of Avignon.
