A third race in the USA will be added to the Formula 1 calendar next year after plans were announced today for a night race on the streets of Las Vegas in November 2023. Las Vegas, which briefly hosted Formula 1 in the early 1980s, will rejoin the calendar alongside existing stateside races in Miami (debuting this season) and Austin.
Known as ‘The Entertainment Capital of the World’ and famed for its casinos, nightlife and theme parks, Las Vegas is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the USA.
The race is set to take place on a 3.8 mile (6.12km) street circuit in the heart of the city, with the cars racing on a section of the famous Las Vegas Strip in front of iconic casino and hotel complexes, including the Venetian, Caesars Palace and the Bellagio.
Designed with overtaking in mind, the 14-turn Las Vegas street circuit will comprise three straights, a high-speed section of corners and a chicane. It is set to be one of the fastest circuits on the calendar, with speeds comparable to Autodromo Monza in Italy.
Breaking with tradition, the 50-lap race is set to be staged under lights on Saturday night, adding to the visual spectacle and allowing fans to experience the city’s legendary nightlife after the chequered flag falls.
